Most Communities Aren’t Ready for the Families Who Walk In, and It Shows
The video explores challenges for first-time assisted living families, highlighting the need for emotional support amid staffing shortages and resource constraints.
Entering assisted living can be a daunting experience for new families seeking emotional support. Unfortunately, many facilities are ill-equipped to provide the necessary guidance during these initial visits, as their focus tends to be on day-to-day operations. The impact of COVID-19 has exacerbated staffing shortages and resource limitations, forcing staff to take on multiple roles. As a result, first-time families often find it challenging to navigate the complexities of the assisted living environment.

Today, walking into a assisted living or a skilled nursing rehab is super intimidating to a new family. You see residents outside waiting to be transported to activities, receptionists who are struggling to answer phones. So it can be very intimidating for first time families to walk in and just get that information that they need to understand what your loved one's gonna go through, your mom, your dad, your sister, your brother, and not to cry at the front desk when all you wanna do is get a hug from somebody to say, this is my first time doing this. I need help. Most facilities, when you walk in, they aren't expecting, you know, families just to come through the door right away, and here's a tour, and everything's magical. You know, most of them are worried about the day to day operations. This industry has changed so much since COVID has happened, and resources are limited for these facilities now. Staffing is a big part of why sales and admissions and marketing aren't available all the time. Facilities are using the resources that they have with limited to no budget sometimes, and they're trying to make everything work. So a lot of people play dual roles in those facilities, whether they're the scheduler, that schedule staff trying to work as a unit manager to sales and marketing, working as food services to help make sure that every resident is fed. So knowing that and being a first time family can be really hard.
