Building AI That Understands Human Emotion
Patrick explains creating empathetic AI through prompt engineering, teaching machines human expectations, tone, and emotional nuance for meaningful, responsible interactions.
This content explores how to create empathetic AI systems by focusing on the human element of AI development - system prompt engineering. Patrick explains that large language models follow instructions crafted by developers, making it the developer's responsibility to establish proper guardrails, tone, and business context. The key is teaching machines about human expectations, emotional responses, and language nuances through carefully constructed prompts. Patrick emphasizes that this process requires developer mastery of language and attention to detail when building initial guardrails, describing it as an artistry layer that helps black-boxed reasoning machines understand and contribute meaningfully to human emotion.

So how to design a system to be empathetic, which is a critical consideration for AI development, I think starts with the most human component of AI development, which is system prompt engineering. These large language models that our products interface with, they're essentially gonna follow the instructions that the human cultivates for the machine. Right? It is the responsibility of the developer to build the appropriate guardrails, to establish tone, to provide the business context instructions, to basically teach the machine what humans expect, how humans respond to language, what language is positive versus what language is negative, what language is risky versus what language is not risky by just taking the time as a developer through your own mastery of the English language, build instructions that teach this black boxed reasoning machine how to make sense of and contribute to human emotion. I think that's the artistry layer of it and it starts with the developer's attention to detail when building out the initial set of guardrails.
